Facts: Newcastle United’s 1996/1997 season was one of high drama and excitement, as the club once again challenged for Premier League glory under Kevin Keegan. The Magpies started strongly and famously thrashed Manchester United 5-0 at St James’ Park in October, a defining moment of the campaign. However, inconsistency in the latter stages saw their title challenge falter. Keegan’s shock resignation in January 1997 stunned the football world, with Kenny Dalglish taking over as manager. Newcastle finished second in the league, securing Champions League qualification for the first time.
