Facts: In the 1998–99 season, Newcastle United endured a disappointing campaign under new manager Ruud Gullit, finishing 13th in the Premier League. Despite high expectations, the team struggled for consistency and goals. Club captain and star striker Alan Shearer had a tense relationship with Gullit, which came to a head when the manager controversially dropped him for the crucial Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland. Newcastle lost the match 2–1 at home, sparking outrage among fans. Though Shearer remained a key figure, the fallout from that decision contributed to mounting pressure on Gullit, who resigned early in the following season.
